  • Appeal to continue rural uplift project

    The employees of Sindh Rural Development Project, local government department, have appealed to the Sindh government, the People's Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement to save the employees of the project and their families from starvation by regularising their services as they are likely to be rendered jobless with the closure of the project.

  • Modernisation of fisheries industry underlined

    Speakers at a seminar on fisheries development stressed the need for streamlining the fisheries sector on modern lines by employing sophisticated machinery and latest technology to enable the country to compete in the international market. The seminar on "Potential and Prospects of Fisheries Development in Sindh and Balochistan' was organised by the University of Karachi at its campus on Thursday in collaboration with the provincial fisheries department and the Fisheries Development Board (FDB). Balochistan Minister for Fisheries Hamal Kalmati was the chief guest.

  • Farmers decry water shortage

    Despite increased flow in River Indus, several waterways of Sindh are still facing water shortage, leading to protests by farmers in different parts of the province. Growers took out a rally and held a demonstration in Nawabshah on Monday to protest against acute water shortage in Dholu Minor canal. The rally started from Daur town and terminated at the Nawabshah Press Club. Growers carrying banners and placards raised slogans against the Irrigation Department.

  • Inefficiency blamed for nagging water shortage

    The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture on Sunday blamed inefficiency of Irrigation Department officials for persistent water shortage in the province even after enormous increase in water level in the River Indus. The chamber's president Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah said at the chamber's weekly meeting that although the river was flowing to its full capacity the water was not being released into the channels and they were running dry. The meeting blamed the officials' inefficiency for nagging water shortage problem and said the growers were crying hoarse for water but they received nothing.

  • Pakistani scientist evolves extra long grain hybrid rice variety

    For the first time in country, private sector, after two-year successful trial based on seven-year field research, have evolved a new variety of "extra long grain hybrid rice with better yield. Prominent scientist Dr Ghulam Mustafa Avesi, who had already developed a total of five new varieties of hybrid rice during the last seven years in collaboration with Yuan Longping Hi of Tech Agriculture Company, China, (the world's largest hybrid rice seed producers).

  • Probe into mangroves destruction ordered

    Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza, who also holds the portfolio of forests, has directed the forest secretary to intensify the efforts to check illegal felling of trees and illegal transportation of timber to protect forestry and environment.

  • Sindh to raise water theft issue with Irsa

    The issue of theft of water from the Indus, between Chashma Barrage (in Punjab) and Guddu Barrage (in Sindh), with the help of pumping machines will be taken up in the next Indus River System Authority meeting, said Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo on Thursday. Talking to journalists at the irrigation rest house, he said that he had written a letter to Federal Minister for Water and Power Pervez Ashraf regarding water shortage in Sindh and requested closure of Chashma-Jhehlum Link Canal which the minister had accepted accordingly.

  • CMs may discuss Kalabagh dam'

    A consensus is being evolved among the provinces on most of the issues and Kalabagh Dam might also come under discussion among chief ministers, says Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah. Mr Shah said this while talking to reporters at the residence of Haji Azizur Rehman Chan, a Pakistan People's Party leader, on Wednesday. He said Kalabagh Dam would only be undertaken when consensus was achieved on the project, which only time would tell how and when it happened.
