THE lights don't go out in Germany and France until you switch them off. And that's most of what they have in common. Three-quarters of the electricity in France is nuclear; in Germany it's a quarter. France is adding to its nuclear capacity, Germany is committed to phasing out nuclear power altogether.
Parisian pollution is nothing compared with that of Beijing or Mexico City. Yet Paris, with 11 million people crammed into a region just 20 kilometres across, is to take centre stage in a new research project on the impact of megacities on air pollution. The MEGAPOLI project, which starts next month, will focus on building regional air-pollution models for every city in the world with a population of more than five million. It encompasses 23 research organizations from 11 European countries, along with 24 collaborating partners outside Europe.
Eiffel Tower London, Sept 1 : The Eiffel tower is set to loose its sparkle, as the administration has decided to cut its glittering light in a new green initiative. State, the company sub-contracted by Paris to run the tower, has decided to cut the time bulbs are run by half, with 400 to 200 hours per year. Since January 1, 2000, every hour after dusk, the 20,000 bulbs twinkle brilliantly for ten minutes and is, indeed, a hit among tourists.
