  • Red the new colour of comfort for Delhi

    The Capital will take another major leap in the field of public transportation with induction of air-conditioned buses into the Delhi Transport Corporation fleet this coming week. These red low-floor buses will hopefully draw more and more users of cars and other private vehicles over to the public transport system. The new air-conditioned buses would provide the citizens a more comfortable mode of travel, especially in the hot and humid summer months. According to Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf, these would form the first lot of air-conditioned buses to be inducted into the DTC.

  • Objection raised to selection of heliport site near Akshardham

    The Union Government's plan to construct a heliport near the sprawling new Akshardham Temple on the Yamuna floodplains in the Capital has set off a wave of concern among activists fighting to save the grand old river. Reacting to the Central Government's statement that a suitable location was being sought near the Akshardham Temple for construction of the heliport, members of the Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan have written to Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna to draw attention to the destruction of natural resource that the proposed construction would cause.

    The metro rail reaching Dilshad Garden in East Delhi six months ahead of schedule has raised the hopes of residents in several other parts of the Capital where work related to the expansion of the rail network is currently under way. Offering a huge relief to travellers by cutting down the commuting time and affording comfortable travel, the Delhi Metro in its second phase will cover 125 km.   • New industrial policy will be welcomed: PHD Chamber

    The PHD Chamber has said it would "welcome' the Delhi Government's new industrial policy when it is announced and enumerated several proposals that it wants to be a part of the finalised policy. Representatives of the Chamber said the new industrial policy would be formulated taking into account the norms of planned development included in the Master Plan for Delhi-2021. It had been revealed by the State Government that the Special Economic Zone policy for Delhi had been approved and would soon be notified.

    In order to check proliferating hazardous e-waste recycling units in the national capital, Delhi Government is roping in private sector to regulate the process. "We have asked the private sector to come forward to develop an electronics waste management project on the basis of public-private partnership,' Delhi Environment Secretary JK Dadoo told PTI here. Delhi is emerging as the world's capital for e-waste recycling, a hazardous activity taking place without any regulations with the major dismantling taking place in unorganisedinformal sector.

  • 20 check-in points in city to ease IGI chaos

    In what will considerably ease the woes of air travellers in the Capital, the Centre is planning to facilitate checking in of luggage at 20 points in the city which also allow passengers to use a fleet of dedicated air-conditioned buses. The scheme will be rolled out in coordination with the Delhi government. The move will help ease congestion at the airport as traffic increases in the run-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It will also introduce facilities that are available at several major destinations where checking in luggage is possible at tube and bus links.

  • CM in Beijing to study BRT

    Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is on a five-day visit here to acquaint herself with Beijing's preparations for the Olympics and study its rapid bus transit system in the backdrop of the controversy over the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) corridor in the Indian capital. With the Commonwealth Games in Delhi two years away, Dikshit, who arrived here today, would meet officials of the organising committee of the Olympic Games and visit the Games venues, official sources said. During her stay in the city, she would also see how Beijing's rapid bus transit system is working, they said.

The ministry has spiked the sectoral regulator's decision de-recognising IGL's projects in the Capital, saying the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board does not have powers to judge entities set up through government orders before it came into existence.
