AHMEDABAD: If you thought malaria and dengue affected only slums or lower-middle class localities, you are mistaken. Last month, consolidated data showed that western and posh new western parts of the city accounted for a large chunk of vector-borne diseases. Ahmedabad: The traditional middle-range housing and migrant population are going to set the rules for Ahmedabad’s real estate market in the coming years. A report on housing demand in eight big cities of India, suggest that Ahmedabad will see a fresh demand of 173,394 units for 2012-16. The report pegs the current supply of houses in Ahmedabad at 51,000 units. Released by global real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield (C&W), the report ‘Evolving Paradigm - Future Of Indian Real Estate’ says that nearly 80% of the demand in the city will come from the mid-ranged category. The high-end category will make up for the remaining 20%.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation ropes in IIM-A startup for LED streetlights
The Gandhi bridge in Ahmedabad will soon get eco friendly streetlights, courtesy a venture by an Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) alumni. IIM-A alumnus Akshat Khare and his partner Dhaval Shah, a Nirma University graduate, through their startup-Nessa Illumination Technologies, will run a pilot project on Gandhi bridge by replacing 10,000 conventional street lights with LED lights. "Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) spends about Rs 12-15 crore annually on external lights in the city. Our business model will help them save up to one-thirds on electricity bills. Besides, the lights are maintenance free, which will help them cut additional costs," said Khare, director, Nessa.
