More than 50,000 people fall prey to contaminated potable water in the Capital every year. According to the Health Department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the number of people who were caught by various waterborne diseases due to the consumption of impure water was 53,956 in 2007 while the number increased up to 59,065 by 2009.
The ruling Congress Government in Assam has come under severe criticism for its dithering on the expert panel report that suggested complete halt of all construction works of the ongoing Lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project site at Gerukamukh. The 2,000-MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Power project, being implemented by the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) is scheduled for completion in 2012.
At a time when depleting green area is a major cause for concern, the New Delhi Municipal Council has resolved for better maintenance and upgrade of its green area including gardens and parks. The civic agency presently maintains 1,100 acres of green cover in the Capital. To achieve the target, the council has proposed whopping budget of Rs 467.47 lakhs for the current financial year.

Wildlife authorities have sounded an alert for Ranthambhore and Sariska tiger sanctuaries in the State following the death of some tigers in the Siberian region of Russia by an unknown disease during the past one month. The alert came ahead of plans to shift two more tigers from Ranthambhore to Sariska on July 4.
