  • Hogenakkal may be first challenge for Yeddy as CM

    The newly elected BJP Government in Karnataka will face its first major crisis in resolving the sensitive Hogenakkal issue with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi announcing the revival of the controversial drinking water project in the Cauvery basin. The two neighbouring states went on the offensive after the Chief Minister-elect BS Yeddyurappa visited Hogenakkal last March and protested against the implementation of the drinking water project to cater to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts in Tamil Nadu.

  • Can't help Goa on SEZs, says Centre

    The Digamber Kamat-led Goa Government will have to consesually get their way out with the SEZ promoters in the State. The Union Commerce Ministry has said that they cannot offer much help for the State Government to denotify three notified SEZs in the State. The letter came as a blow to the State Government which is currently reeling under severe political pressure to save its existence. State chief secretary JP Singh said that the Government has received such a letter and we will take the stand within a couple of days after thorough discussion on the issue.

    WHO meets its ambitious '3 by 5' target, although a tad late, writes Maria Cheng from London In 2003, the World Health Organisation began its ambitious '3 by 5' initiative to treat AIDS, promising to put three million infected people worldwide on anti-retroviral drugs within two years. According to a report issued on Monday, the WHO finally succeeded last year. Despite missing their deadline, officials were upbeat. "If every UN health target was met just two years late, the world would be a much better place," said Dr Kevin De Cock, director of WHO's AIDS department.

  • Petroleum Ministry reaffirms expansion of IGL to NCR

    Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has recently reaffirmed the authorised status of IGL to serve not only the city of Delhi but also its suburbs in NCR. Going ahead with its expansion plan to meet the public demand, the IGL will cover the areas namely Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The decision came following the certain regulatory issues and interpretations put the IGL, a decade-old joint venture company of GAIL, BPCL and Government of NCT of Delhi, expansion on hold due to spiralling prices of other fuel which made consumer to go rapidly on CNG.

  • Delhi, UP sign pact for a smooth bus ride after 23 yrs

    The bus commuters plying between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh can now look forward to an easy journey. The Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Governments signed an agreement on Monday, which would facilitate free movement of vehicles in each other's territory. "Better connectivity between NCR in UP and Delhi and free movement of commercial vehicles of the NCR States like Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh will now be possible. This is a historic agreement signed after 23 years," said Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf.

    Brutality, man-made disasters cause regular elephant deaths With their habitat shrinking fast, elephants are regularly falling prey to human brutality and man-made disasters. The last few days have been especially tragic for these gentle beasts. After the shooting down of a tusker in Ranipur Jhal area of Hardwar district last Thursday, an elephant and her one-year-old calf were electrocuted near Dimna lake near Jamshedpur on Monday while the decomposed body of another pachyderm was discovered at the Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand.

  • 'BRT review to better project'

    The Delhi Government on Wednesday informed the Centre that it is reviewing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in view of the public outrage. Senior Government officials, in a meeting chaired by Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran, said they are working on other modalities so that the concept works albeit in a different format. Some of the Government officials were also at the receiving end for introducing the ill-conceived project.

    With an obstinate Government going ahead with the Bus Rapid Transport system disregarding growing unrest against the project, unhappy Union Urban Development Ministry has stepped in to put tough questions to the patrons of the controversial plan. The Ministry has asked the Delhi Government to remove glitches and apprehensions pertaining to the ill-conceived BRT corridor project in Delhi.
