CNG price may go up to Tk 15 by March, gas price will also increase
The government is likely to increase the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) to around Tk 15 per cubic metre from the existing price of Tk 8.5 by March, said sources in the Energy Division. Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed has already given the nod to the Energy Division to complete the groundwork for increasing the price of CNG in consultation with the communications ministry, they said.

ADB wants energy subsidy cut to support safety net scheme
The government should partially withdraw energy subsidy to divert the money to public spending on safety net for the vulnerable groups, said the top official of the Asian Development Bank in Dhaka on Sunday. Under-pricing of energy sources, including fuel and gas, results in a huge deficit in the government's budget and multilateral lending agencies have time and again recommended upward adjustment of prices to reduce losses incurred by agencies like the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation.

Frequent power outages hit irrigation in north
FARMERS in the northern districts are facing great troubles to irrigate the last moment boro fields before harvesting due to frequent power outages. Thousands of power-run pumps remain inoperative in most of the time in a day for the frequent load-shedding. The dream of bumper production of boro paddy will be shattered if the situation of power outages is not improved immediately, the farmers said.
