  • Cherrapunjee getting drier

    The town of Cherrapunjee, in the Indian state of Meghalaya, is reputed to be the wettest place in the world. But there are signs that its weather patterns may be being hit by global climate change. "Not without reason has Cherrapunjee achieved fame as being the place with the heaviest rainfall on earth," wrote German missionary Christopher Becker more than 100 years ago.

  • Adulterated food destroyed in Gaibandha

    Adulterated food items seized by a mobile court were burnt to ashes on the premises of District Collectorate Building (DCB) here on Thursday. A mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Abu Rafa Md Arif conducted a raid at Jewel Biscuit Agency at Gown Market in the town on Wednesday and then sealed off the warehouse on charge of storing adulterated food items. On the following day, the mobile court led by Executive Magistrate AKM Galiv Khan recovered the adulterated food items worth about Taka one lakh from the warehouse on Thursday and destroyed those through setting on fire.

  • Crisis of T-aman seed hits farmers Poor farmers in Narsingdi

    The poor farmers in different upazilas of Narsingdi are facing uncertainty over cultivation of transplanted aman paddy this year due to acute shortage of seeds. The farmers, particularly in char areas of the district, are yet to collect seeds of T-aman paddy in the peak season due to crisis of seeds, local sources said. Everyday, several hundred farmers are crowding the BADC godowns for seeds but most of them return home disappointed, they said.

  • River erosion turns grave in Netrakona villages

    River erosion has taken a serious turn in different border villages of three upazilas in Netrakona with at least 300 dwelling houses and 600 acres of crop land devoured in the last three days. The people living near the Sumeshowary and Kongsa rivers here are passing days with fear as the two rivers are fast eroding houses and crop land, local sources said. The erosion-hit villages are Shibgonj, Dakumara, Kamarkhali and Birishiri under Durgapur upazila, Fakirar Bazar and Dashdar under Barhatta upazila and village Borail under Netrakona sadar upazila.

  • Betel leaf production continues to decline in Noakhali

    Betel leaf production continues to decline in Noakhali as farmers are losing interest in cultivating this cash crop due to manifold problems. Price hike of farming inputs, absence of marketing facilities and paucity of fund are the main reasons for gradual decline in production of betel leaf in the district, growers said. Official sources said about 450 growers of Hatiya, Subarnachar and Companiganj upazila of the district are now engaged in cultivating betel leaf on six hundred acres of land. A farmer needs Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 to cultivate betel leaf on one bigha of land.

  • 188 rice mills lose licences

    Licences of 188 rice mills have been cancelled in Pabna for not supplying rice and paddy to the government warehouses at official rates fixed for the on-going food procurement drive. The cancellation orders were issued on July 1 as per recommendations of the district food procurement committee, food office sources said.

  • Shabby state of roads in Dhaka

    Damage of many roads during heavy monsoon showers of the past few days has left the capital's road infrastructure in a shabby state, causing problems to vehicular movement and sufferings to the people. The condition of the roads in Uttara, Dhanmondi, Dakkhin Khan, Mohammadpur and some other areas are in a vulnerable state with potholes developing at many points, residents said.

  • Hong Kong's unemployment rate stays at 3.3 per cent

    Hong Kong's unemployment rate for the three months to June stayed at 3.3 per cent, the same as in the previous two periods, official figures showed Thursday. The figure was unchanged from the February to April and March to May period, the Census and Statistics Department said in a statement. Total employment decreased by around 1,200 from the previous three-month period to 3.53 million the government said, but the labour forced decreased by around 1,900 to 3.65 million.

  • BRTA court seizes 16 CNG auto-rickshaws

    A mobile court of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority on Thursday filed 62 cases against similar number of CNG-run auto-rickshaws and realised Tk 6.21 lakh in fines for playing the vehicles illegally in the capital. The court, during in its drive in the city's Postagola area, also seized 16 CNG auto-rickshaws for not having any documents and failing to pay the fine.
