  • 80-feet breach of Khewra canal damages crops

    The Khewra canal has been breached near Chak 385-JB Sahrian, inundating the crops on hundreds of acres of land. The water speedily moved towards Chak 378-JB Fattowal. However, the staff of Irrigation Department with the help of farmers succeeded to divert the water flow into a nearby nullah. The farmers criticised irrigation department and PIDA staff for showing negligence in strengthening the banks of the canal. Eighty feet breach could not be plugged till the filing of this report.

  • 'Water conservation essential for attaining food security'

    Federal Science and Technology Secretary Sharif Ahmad has said that water conservation is essential in attaining food security. "We need to develop a culture of water conservation at grass root level, and also invest in both major and mini reservoirs to store water," he said.

  • CNG price hike: LHC issues notices to government, others

    The Lahore High Court has issued notices to the government and others and called for a report following a petition against increase in the compressed national gas (CNG) prices announced by the petroleum minister. The court will also order the government to implement the original increase. Consumer Amjad Ali Qasim argued that the minister petroleum had announced an increase of Rs 13 per kilogramme but the ministry issued a notification saying the actual increase was Rs 4.38 instead of Rs 13.

  • NWFP government approves dam at Gul Hassan Banda

    NWFP Minister for Housing Malik Amjad Khan Afridi has said that construction of Dam at Gul Hassan Banda, Kohat has been approved while feasibility survey of the Garang Dam has also been ordered. He further said, on completion of these dams, besides bringing thousands acres barren land under cultivation would also improve the socio-economic condition of the people of the area. This, he said, while addressing a public meeting at Gul Hassan Banda, Kohat on Monday. MNA from Kohat Pir Dilawar Shah and notable of the area Fazli Rabi also addressed the gathering.

  • LPG price up by Rs two per kg

    Prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) on Monday shot up by Rs 2 per kg, Rs 20 per 11.8 kg cylinder and Rs 78 per 45.4 kg cylinder in the local markets of Sindh and NWFP traders said. After a fresh increase, LPG is available at Rs 66 per kg, Rs 710-720 per 11.8-kg cylinder and Rs 2750 per 45.4-kg cylinder in the province.

  • World Bank to finance $256.7 million power projects

    Pakistan on Monday signed two agreements with the World Bank for making improvement in electricity distribution and transmission infrastructure worth 256.7 million dollars and water sector capacity building and advisory services for its efficient management worth 38 million dollars. The financing agreements for both projects were signed by acting Secretary of Economic Affairs Division Junaid Iqbal Chaudhry on behalf of the government of Pakistan and Country Director Yousapha B. Crookes on behalf of the World Bank.

  • Hydropower projects vital for coping with crisis: Prime Minister

    Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday said the policies of the present government are highly investment friendly and it would welcome foreign investment in hydropower projects. The Prime Minister said this while talking to Vice President China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE) Wang Shaofeng who along with a delegation called on him at Prime Minister House.

  • Government fails to develop virus free types crops

    Federal and provincial governments had formed a project worth million of rupees to introduce virus free types but even after the passage of 16 years all the research institutions of the country failed to invent virus free type. Last year the crops were attacked by different viruses including mealy bug, which resulted the loss of million of rupees.

  • Government advised to produce thermal energy by using coal

    Pakistan could have avoided the adverse effects of the high cost of petroleum products including petrol, diesel and furnace oil, if it had avoided over reliance on petroleum based products for generating thermal power and had instead given encouragement to use indigenously produced coal in power generation, reports UPP correspondent. The conversion of the Pakistan Railways to diesel engines instead of coal engines resulted in growing use of diesel by the railways and the discarding of coal for running railway engines while in India nearly 50 percent of railway engines still run on coal.

  • Seminar on agriculture production in AJK soon

    Agriculture Chamber of Azad Jammu Kashmir is going to organise a national seminar on agriculture production in Mirpur Azad Kashmir soon. The moot is aimed at raising awareness among the people to ensure their maximum participation in the universal drive for the elimination of thrust and poverty through their maximum role and participation in the agricultural activities to boost the agricultural productions in their respective area.
