  • 'Land grant policy' for farmers introduced: Marri

    The Sindh government has introduced 'Land Grant Policy' for poor farmers in the 2008-09 Budget for 'absolute' elimination of feudalism from the province. "Absolutely, this is to eliminate feudalism and change this (feudal) mindset," Sindh Minister for Information Shazia Marri told Business Recorder when asked if the Policy, under which 212000 acres land would be granted to landless farmers, could be termed as a step towards elimination of feudalism in the province.

  • Four million acre feet water stored in dams

    Water and Power Development Authority has so far stored more than four million acre feet water in three reservoirs - Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma - which reached dead level on May 11, 2008. Wapda is storing half of the current inflows of rivers Indus and Jhelum in Tarbela and Mangla dams respectively and releasing 0.32 million cusecs water of the Indus, Jhelum, Kabul and Chenab for sowing of Kharif crop. The position of the river inflows/outflows at Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma along with the reservoirs levels and the barrages on Tuesday morning was as under:

  • 212 Veterinary Aid Centres set up in Sindh

    The Directorate of Animal Husbandry Sindh has established 212 Veterinary Aid Centres (VAC) throughout the province besides a Field Work Emergency Cell (FWEC) has also been set up to monitor and co-ordinate the functioning of these VAC centres. This was stated by Director Animal Husbandry Sindh Dr Ghulam Sarwar Shaikh while briefing the media about precautionary measures adopted by his management to provide relief to the animal breeders during the monsoon season at his office on Tuesday.

  • NWFP budget focuses on food, security

    The NWFP government, in its budget for fiscal 2008-09, has targeted the resolution of the problems of food and security in the province. "Handsome sanctions of funds have been made for the resolution of these two problems faced by the province," said NWFP Finance Minister Mohammad Hamayun Khan in a post-budget press conference here in the Cabinet Room of the Civil Secretariat.

  • Rs 11.30 billion allocated for irrigation sector

    The Punjab government has allocated Rs 11.30 billion for the Irrigation sector in the budget 2008-09. This shows an increase of around 3 percent over the allocations made for the 2007-08 fiscal and constitute about 11.2 percent of the core Annual Development Programme (ADP) (2008-09) budget under the mid term development framework MTDF 2008-11.

  • Punjab government revives green tractor scheme

    The Punjab government has revived the green tractor scheme under which Rs 01 million will be given as subsidy to the small farmers for the purchase of a tractor. The government has allocated Rs 1 billion to provide subsidy on purchase of 10,000 green tractors in the 2008-09 budget. Only holders of upto twelve and a half acres agriculture land will be eligible to benefit from this scheme. Green tractors will be given through balloting of applicants to make the system transparent and judicious.

  • MGAP says budget not farmer-friendly

    The Mango Growers Association of Pakistan (MGAP) has termed the budget 2008-09 as vague and fairly not farmer-friendly. The MGAP is of the view that the enhanced subsidy for DAP fertiliser is practically unworkable as subsidies are exploited and the entire benefit is taken by the hoarders and profiteers.

  • Substandard vaccines menace vexes poultry farmers

    The rapidly spreading menace of counterfeit, sub-standard and unregistered vaccines is rising risks to poultry industry and could lead to incurable diseases across the country. Poultry farmers told Business Recorder on Monday that the Sindh government in particular failed to rein in the manufacturers and paddlers of illegal drugs. "We are seeking the Sindh government's help in controlling bird diseases being made incurable through substandard medicines spreading widely in the country," they maintained.
