  • Watercourses improvement project extended

    The government has extended watercourses improvement project for further two years under the National Programme for Improvement of Watercourses to cop up the agricultural production. Punjab Minister for Agriculture, Ahmad Ali Aulakh chairing a meeting at the Agriculture House on Thursday said that the previous government had set aside more than Rs 28 million to complete 30,000 watercourses in the Punjab, including canal commend areas and rain fed tract.

  • Construction of major dams: government decides to formally launch campaign

    The government has decided to formally launch a campaign for constructing major dams as the concerned authorities have agreed to go slow on "controversial" Kalabagh dam, sources told Business Recorder on Thursday. "The formal launch of the campaign will help the government in procuring foreign and local funding for the dams, whose construction is must to save the country from becoming water-scarce country," the sources said.

  • US to provide more financial and technical support to agriculture sector

    The US will provide more financial and technical support to agricultural sector to promote academic and research activities. This was stated by members of a US delegation while talking to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF) Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, during their visit to the University on Wednesday. Higher Education Specialist Academy of Educational Development, USA, Dr Jerry Boardman told the Vice Chancellor that US need based scholarship programme will be enhanced to provide more financial support to the intelligent and needy students.

  • Project costing Rs two billion to curb 'foot and mouth' disease

    Livestock and Dairy Development Board (LDDB) will launch a project costing Rs 2 billion to control highly infectious disease 'foot and mouth' that causes Rs 6 to 8 billion loss per annum. Chief Executive of the LDDB, Dr Muhammad Afzal revealed this while talking to Business Recorder here on Tuesday. LDDB Deputy Project Coordinator, Dr Naveed Niazi was also present.

    Proactive involvement of private sector, high fish production and soft loans to the farmers has made fish farming a profitable industry in the province. This was stated by Director General Fisheries Punjab Dr Muhammad Ayub while addressing a departmental meeting at Fisheries Research and Training Institute (FRTI).

  • 'Over Rs 3.8 billion to be spent on agriculture in Punjab'

    Punjab Minister for Agriculture, Ahmad Ali Aulakh has said that more than Rs 3.8 billion will be spent on agriculture in 2008-09. "Out of the proposed allocation of Rs 3.8 billion for annual development programme, Rs 2 billion will be provided for the ongoing projects under different wings of the Agriculture Department and about Rs 1.8 billion will be allocated for new projects to be selected on merit to achieve the desired development targets," the minister said.

    Provincial Minister Syed Ali Mardan Shah, terming the irrigation water scarcity in District Umerkot as artificial and created by some vested interests, has vowed to take all possible measures to remove the shortage.   • Minfal proposes Rs 5.5 billion increase in subsidy on fertilisers

    The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) has proposed Rs 22.5 billion subsidy on fertilisers in the coming budget 2008-09 against Rs 17 billion allocated in the budget 2007-08, sources told Business Recorder here on Wednesday. DAP is the only fertiliser that is being subsidised by the government. As in the budget 2007-08, it was decided to provide the subsidy of Rs 17 billion while giving Rs 470 subsidy on each bag of 50 kg of DAP.

  • Rs 400 million to be allocated for Sindh villages electrification

    The Sindh government would allocate Rs 400 million in the provincial budget for fiscal 2008-09 for the electrification of 360 villages of the province. The Sindh irrigation and power department has already forwarded the proposal of the project to the finance department for its inclusion in the next budget, a high-up of the department informed Business Recorder here on Wednesday.

  • LPG price up by Re 1 per kg

    Following the increase in CNG prices, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) marketing companies have also raised the price of 11.8 kg cylinder from Rs 510 to Rs 530, effective from May 7. The Chairman of LPG Distributors Association, Hadi Khan, said here on Tuesday that the retail price of LPG has gone up by Re 1 and now it would be sold at Rs 48 per kg in the city. He said that some LPG marketing companies have raised their prices despite the fact that producers are paying a rebate of Rs 11 to Rs 15 to the marketing companies to enhance their turnover.
