Plea to remove Agriculture Ministry’s nominee from panel

The Coalition for GM-free India has urged the Supreme Court to “remove” the Agriculture Ministry’s nominee from the Technical Expert Committee (TEC) on genetically modified crops on account of alleged ‘conflict of interest’ in the matter of a PIL filed on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
The committee that was set up to advise the court on the technicality of whether the GMOs should be banned or not, has, in its interim report, recommended a 10-year moratorium on field trials of GM crops in the country till such time a proper regulatory system is put in place.

The Supreme Court on Friday warned states and Union Territories that they may face contempt action if they failed to file compliance reports on gutkha ban within six weeks.

"We are giving clear warning to the governments. We will initiate suo motu contempt proceedings against them if they fail to file report on compliance of banning gutkha products in their states. Those who do not file report shall do at their own peril," said a Bench led by Justice G S Singhvi.

New Delhi: To enhance accountability for those in food business, Delhi government is all set to make it mandatory for them to seek registration, procure a licence from the department or face penalty.

According to the proposed policy, any food vendor, inclusive of roadside eateries, restaurants, hotels and food processors, with a turnover of up to Rs 12 lakh a year has to register themselves with the government. Those with larger turnover will have to obtain licence from the government.
