It`s Catching On
The Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (nfej), an environmental organisation based in Nepal, is campaigning for a mandatory toilet condition for village development committee (vdc)-level elections in Nepal. "A candidate in vdc elections could be a role model for promoting health and sanitation,' says Rajesh Ghimire, general secretary of nfej , explaining the organisation's stand. Only 20 per cent of Nepal's population have access to toilets. To add to this, only 7.5 per cent of the total budget for water supply has been allocated for sanitation in the country. The nfej are, therefore, promoting the pit latrine, which uses excreta for fertilisers. This has the advantage of minimising the use of water.
