CNG drive reaches Mumbai

CNG drive reaches Mumbai   after Delhi's public transport system switched over to compressed natural gas (cng), it is Mumbai's turn to receive a green makeover. In this case, too, the judiciary is the catalyst for change. The Mumbai High Court has given an ultimatum to owners of all 15-year-old taxis and 10-year-old autorickshaws to either convert their vehicles to cng by March 1, 2002, or stop plying them. It further requires eight-year-old taxis and autos to go green by January 1, 2003. The order sounds the death-knell for the highly polluting diesel in the metropolis. While 15-year-old commercial tempos and trucks have been asked to fall in line by January 1, 2003, eight-year-old ones get time till January 1, 2004, to clean up their act.
