Controversial can
the latest thing that is brewing up a storm in Europe is a new self-cooling drink can which could cause global warming. Britain is now seeking new ways to ban the can. "If the can captures, say 10 per cent of the uk market by the year 2000, it would produce emissions equivalent to 43.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide,' said Michael Meacher, the British minister for environment.
Meacher recently asked the European Commission and the environment ministers of the European Union countries to consider the options for banning imports and outlawing production of the can. The new can comes with a aerosol container which chills the drink at room temperature in less than two minutes at the press of a button. When the nozzle at the bottom of the can is pressed, the aerosol container releases a gas which is 1,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping the heat in Earth's lower atmosphere. The can is expected be pro duced by a usa -based company later this year.
