ICAO's clean up measures

The International Civil Aviation Organization recently adopted a programme to counter effects of global warming in the aviation industry. It, however, rejected eu proposals to cut carbon emissions made by the industry.

After a 10-day-long meeting, on September 28 in Montreal, Canada, the majority of the delegates at the un body rejected the eu proposal to impose quotas on co2 emissions on airlines and include airlines in emissions-trading schemes. eu officials plan to impose such restrictions in 2012 for all flights landing and departing the union.

The un body, however, agreed to actions to address aviation environmental issues, such as aircraft noise, and to introduce economic incentives that will motivate contracting nations to limit aviation greenhouse-gas emissions.
