Traffic and transportation policies and strategies in urban areas in India: final report
The transportation modes in Indian cities are multifarious with varying capacity and widely varying sizes and speeds. The objectives of this study are: to evolve alternative urban transport development policies and strategies at national, sate and city levels covering infrastructure development, traffic management, control and enforcement, public transport development and operation in order to achieve optimal utilisation of resources, increasing mobility in the cities, maintaining a desirable modal split which would be energy efficient and sustain environmental balance in urban areas; to assess financial implications in the light of proposed policy and suggest financing options including division of responsibilities; and to suggest institutional structure for the urban transport system development and management.
