Grain of truth
Eating more whole grain foods can lower the risk of heart disease in women. Simin Liu and colleagues from the Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, analysed the medical histories of 75,521 women and found that compared with women in the lowest fifth of whole grain intake, women in the highest quintile of whole grain intake (2.7 servings per day) had a 43 per cent lower risk of stroke. Their research has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association .
