Food and Nutrition Security Policy of Bhutan, 2012
Gross National Happiness (GNH) may remain a dream for the people and Bhutan’s ability to contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goal of halving hunger, malnutrition and poverty by 2015 could be undermined if immediate action is not taken. This has been outlined in the draft Food and Nutrition Security Policy of the Kingdom of Bhutan 2012, which states that “available information on food consumption, incomes and nutritional status confirms that food and nutrition security needs to be addressed.” It has also revealed that hunger and malnutrition imply human suffering which reduces Gross National Happiness and undermines Bhutan’s ability to contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goal of halving hunger, malnutrition and poverty by 2015. It is also being mentioned that excessive poverty would lead to malnutrition and low birth weights of child. “In women, it also results in fetal malnutrition and low birth weights,” the draft report states.
