Rolling resistance thresholds: an opportunity for Indian sustainable transportation
Today there are growing concerns about carbon emissions and fuel consumption linked to tyre use in the transportation industry. It has become important enough for the European Union to introduce emission standards and labeling focused on tyres. This report looks at regulatory considerations for India at its present stage of development along with its unique set of challenges. Rolling resistance reaches beyond being just a tyre issue that affects fuel consumption and carbon emissions. It is also a key indicator for manufacturers reporting on fuel efficiency of their vehicles. The report provides an overview of India’s transportation challenges, looks at what lessons India could learn from the EU experience, benchmark other economies on how they are approaching rolling resistance regulations and suggests some approaches and strategies that could work in the Indian context. It zooms in on the transportation sector and discusses outcomes if certain pending Indian government decisions are made.
