Lingo of sustainability
As the movement for sustainable development continues to gain momentum, the need to understand the language used by practitioners of "green' revolution becomes more urgent. Addressing this concern, students of the Presidio School of Management in San Francisco, USA, have compiled an online dictionary to show how sustainability concepts are creating new understandings in the worlds of business, government and society.
Available as an open resource, the dictionary is geared towards business people and students. It features 279 must-know terms of sustainable business.
The definitions are acute and assist visitors to quickly understand the meanings of words ranging from e-waste to zero waste and some terms used mainly in business such as the integrated bottom line, natural capital, biomimicry and life-cycle analysis.
Ron Nahser, the provost of the management school, says, Students realised there was no useful guide to locate the meanings of many words used in instruction and discussions. This venture is an idea that was developed specifically to fill a void in the marketplace.
