Report to the NGT on Uppoor Power Plant, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, 24/12/2020

Brief written submissions filed by U. Kalimuthan and others. A coal based thermal power plant by the name Uppoor Power Plant in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. A land of 1342.11 acres of land was acquired in and around 3 villages namely Uppoor, Valamavur and Thirupalaikudi in Thiruvadanai taluk, Ramanathapuram district. The Terms of Reference dated May 28, 2012 expired on May 27, 2015 and thereafter environmental clearance was granted dated May 18, 2016.

The appellants are all villagers whose livelihood is either farming or fishing. Some of the objections raised by the appellants was - improper public hearing, marine EIA report not available to the public, deficiency in EIA report among others.
