An expert committee constituted by the government has recommended sharply diluted implementation of the food security bill proposed by the National Advisory Council (NAC), headed by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi , paving way for the second serious disagreement in a month between arms of the government and its high-profile policy advisory body. An expert committee headed by C Rangarajan , chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, has concluded that the provisions envisaged by the NAC may have to be ‘calibrated’ due to non-availability of food grain, the potential distortion of open market food prices and the “large subsidy implications”.
