In line with the depressed projections of economic growth, the Planning Commission on Wednesday lowered the target for power capacity addition during the 12th Plan period ending March 2017 to 88,000 Megawatt (Mw) from 100,000 Mw set earlier. Depletion of storage at hydel resources and technical snag at a generating unit at the Raichur Thermal Power Station have aggravated the problem. The power utilities resorted to unscheduled loadshedding throughout the State, including Bangalore, to make up for the power shortage. Many areas in Bangalore faced loadshedding varying from 90 minutes to two hours during peak demand while the loadshedding was even more in the remaining parts of the State.
Punjab was forced to undergo long power cuts for upto six hours after two units of the Ropar Thermal plant tripped today, leading to acute shortage of power. The state lost as much as 420 MW power on Friday due to the tripping of the two thermal power generation units at the Ropar power plant.

The station, built by the Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company, already has two 30-MW units and two 120-MW units operating.
To Provide 1,200 MW Addl Power Lucknow: The power situation in the state is likely to improve a bit with two private sector power plants -- Rosa and Lanco -- getting operational to their full capacity. The UP Power Corporation Limited officials said that all the units of these two plants with combined stalled capacity of 2,400 MW were not working due to commercial dispute, ostensibly caused by non-payment of dues. With unavailability of coal posing hurdle to 1320 Mw expansion plan of Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC), the only state-owned thermal power generator, the state government has sought interim coal linkage from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) from its Basundhara group of mines. The government has requested MCL to provide interim coal requirement to the tune of 16 million tonnes to OPGC to feed two new units of 660 Mw each over a period of three years from the Basundhara group of mines beginning from the later part of 2016-17, when the expansion project is expected to go on stream.
