Climate change may displace 20 million people: Dr Hasan
State Minister for Environment and Forest Dr Hasan Mahmud on Thursday said about 20 million people might be displaced from coastal belts as a result of sea level rise following climate change. Floods in Eastern Sri Lanka displace people
As a result of the continuing heavy rains several areas in the Batticaloa District, in Eastern Sri Lanka have been severely flooded. The Disaster Management Center (DMC) of Sri Lanka said that most of the families at Kaththankudi, Ariyampathi, Wellawalai and Eravur have been displaced due the floods. All the main roads in those areas have also been blocked due to the floods, the DMC added.

Steel cos may have to fund rehab for evictees
THE government is exploring the option of creating a fund through contribution from steel companies, the annuity from which would help meet the livelihood requirement of those affected by projects. The government hopes that through this measure it would be able to acquire land more easily for steel projects while giving a more humane face to industrialisation.

Twister damages 103 houses in Sri Lanka
A twister that blew across the Bulathsinhala area in Kalutara last night damaged at least 103 houses. The Disaster Management Center said that 89 houses have been completely destroyed and others were partially damaged.
