That's the eye-popping projection that urban and rural planners, gathered today for their annual meeting in Las Vegas, are hearing from a land-use expert.

    The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday said no child will be denied admission in primary schools run by it due to non-submission of birth certificate. Provisional admission is being granted to every child seeking admission in primary schools after accepting an affidavit by the guardian, subject to submission of birth certificate later on, civic body officials said.

  • Govt: Keep census data out of RTI

    The Union home ministry has suggested that the data obtained in the coming Census 2011 needs to be kept out of the ambit of the Right to Information Act. The Registrar-General of India (RGI), the body under the home ministry entrusted with the task of generating data on population statistics, has said that the "confidentiality" guar anteed to the informants by the Census Act in respect of census information has been "partly eroded" after the enactment of the RTI Act of 2005. "This position will need to be restored in the interest of quality of census data," it has said.

  • Continue feeding extreme poor

    Regulatory Reforms Commission (RRC) Chairman Dr Akbar Ali Khan yesterday urged the government to continue feeding the extreme poor despite good prospect of boro harvest. "The country needs adequate quantity of food stock. In addition, there should be food arrangement for the extreme poor, as they won't be able to buy food at whatever may be the level of price,' he told reporters at the RRC office. Dr Akbar Ali said, "The government also needs to create employment opportunities for them (extreme poor).'

  • TB infection rate 20 times higher among prisoners: Study

    The rate of being affected by Tuberculosis (TB) among the prisoners is 20 times higher than the rate among general population, a study said yesterday. International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) conducted the study in Dhaka Central Jail. The study led by Dr Sayera Banu, associate scientist of ICDDR,B screened some 12,464 prisoners in Dhaka Jail. It further found that 22 percent of prisoners who were found negative in TB screening in the jail laboratory were later found positive when ICDDR,B screened their sputum through 'culture' technology.

    Delhi-based Vidhi Khandelwal, an eight-year-old girl, has been skating 3,000 kms to spread the message "Prevent Female Foeticide". This amazing girl, a test-tube baby, started her marathon from Delhi's India Gate and has so far travelled across four states: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

  • Census may exclude questions on fertility

    The Census 2011 is expected to do away with the questions on "age at marriage" and "fertility". The question on "number of married couples having independent room for sleeping" can also be out. These questions have "posed challenges" at the time of data collection in terms of eliciting a clear response from informants, the Union home ministry has been informed. Other questions that might not figure in the 2011 Census are, "travel to place of work" and "households engaged in cultivation /plantation".

    The Philippines' population has grown over two percent each year since 2000, the government said on Thursday, but experts said Asia's biggest Catholic nation was unlikely to change policies to slow the increase. The country has one of the highest population growth rates in the region, with at least three babies born every minute. Its population reached 88.57 million at a census in August last year, up from 76.5 million in 2000, the government said on Thursday.
