  • Australian Police Arrest Kangaroo Cull Protesters

    Police arrested eight protesters on Wednesday as they tried to stop a cull of hundreds of kangaroos on a military base near the Australian capital, and local Aborigines joined the campaign against the slaughter. Elders from the local indigenous Ngunnawal clan said they were reclaiming the land from the Australian Defence Force, lighting a small ceremonial fire, which they attempted to carry onto the defence communications site. "We are claiming our land and that's what our sacred fire means," elder Isobel Coe shouted at police as protesters forced their way to the site of the cull.

  • 15% of Sri Lankan population is extremely poor, a government study says

    Following a recent survey Sri Lanka's Department of Census and Statistics said that 15% of the country's total population lives under extreme poverty conditions. The Department has also identified 19 most poor Grama Sewa Wasams (Village Officer Divisions) in Sri Lanka during the study that was conducted to categorize the Grama Sewa Wasams against the poverty line.

  • State to be 70 pc urban in 10 yrs'

    In an astounding revelation, top state economist YK Alagh has calculated that Gujarat's land will become 70 per cent urban by the middle of the next decade. Addressing the annual convocation of Dharmasinh Desai University, Nadiad, on Saturday, Prof Alagh said, "Already, there are 2,018 villages in Gujarat which should be stopped being categorized as rural, yet they are governed by village panchayats.' He stressed on urban planning in these villages.

  • Japan's child population sags to record low for 27th year in row

    The number of children aged 14 or younger is estimated to have totaled 17.25 million in Japan as of April 1, marking a record low for the 27th straight year, according to a government report released one day ahead of the Children's Day holiday on Monday. Children formed 13.5% of the aggregate population, making Japan the country with the lowest percentage of children among 31 major countries. Their proportion of the total population fell from 13.6% last year, registering a drop for the 34th year in a row, the report showed.

  • Japanese loan to be used for rural uplift in Sindh and Punjab

    A Rs29.6 billion loan approved by Japan under its official development assistance (ODA) will be used for development of rural areas in Sindh and Punjab and development of infrastructure and irrigation sector. The Japan Bank for Inter-national Cooperation (JBIC) has now released details of the 47.943billion yen (Rs29.6 billion) ODA utilisation, an agreement for which was signed on Saturday.

  • Rich World Must Back 80 Percent Carbon Cuts - Stern

    Rich countries must commit to cutting carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050 and developing nations must agree that by 2020 they too will set their own targets, leading economist Nicholas Stern said on Wednesday. He said the only way the world could defeat the climate crisis was by ensuring that global carbon emissions peaked within 15 years, were then halved from 1990 levels to 20 billion tonnes a year by 2050, and cut to 10 billion thereafter.

  • Rs. One lakh award for information of female foeticide

    Madhya Pradesh Minister for Health and Family Welfare Shri Ajay Vishnoi has announced a ten time increase in the cash award given to those informing of female foeticide. The reward has been increased from Rs. ten thousand to Rs. one lakh.
