Goa public accounts committee blows the lid off mining scam
The PAC has blown the lid off probably the biggest mining scam of all times in Goa. It has found that almost half of the active iron ore mines in the state were illegal and have caused an estimated loss of Rs. 3,000 crore to the exchequer since 2005.

Cabinet clears mining Bill calling for sharing of profit
New Delhi Miners’ riches will soon have to be shared with the people affected by their activity. The Cabinet on Friday gave its approval to a Bill which proposes to make it mandatory for mining companies to compensate the local population impacted by mining operations. The Bill will be introduced in Parliament in the winter session.

69 forest officials slapped with notices
The State Forest department has begun to act on the recommendations of the final report by Lokayukta on illegal mining. The department had suspended 29 officials who reportedly had direct nexus with incarcerated former minister Janardhana Reddy, and his brothers, and issued showcause notices to 69 others indicted in the report.

Ban on mining to impact steel, iron ore cos: Report
Chennai The Supreme Court’s extended ban on mining in Tumkur and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka is expected to cast a shadow on the iron ore miners and steel companies. The ban on two more districts, in addition to the one in Bellary, will result in a sharp decline of iron ore production which will be followed with a severe cut in steel production. The performance of companies such as Sesa Goa and JSW Steel is expected to be adversely affected, said a report of Angel Broking.
