Bangalore: Chief Minister Yeddyurappa has given a mild dose to the mining and quarrying operators of the State. He has proposed to levy Forest Development Tax on all mining and quarrying operators in the forest areas. At present, only PSUs are under the tax net. The CM expects to raise an additional revenue of Rs 150 crore a year through this new exercise. When A K Verma was PCCF he had recommended to the government to levy Forest Development Tax at the rate of 12 per cent on private mining and quarrying operators in forest areas. The tax rate for PSUs is 8 per cent.
Bangalore, DHNS: With a view to completing the irrigation schemes in Krishna, Cauvery and Godavari basins, the government has allocated Rs 3394.41 crore this year... Around 73,000 hectare are proposed to be brought under irrigation. For full usage of water under large and medium projects, the water users' associations will be formed.

S. Rajendran BANGALORE: The Karnataka government is embarking on a major plan to encourage organic farming in the State, and Thursday's budget is expected to have an allocation of funds for this. The State will have a full-fledged wing to monitor organic farming. Experts in agriculture and horticulture and agricultural scientists are being roped in under the plan. A sum of Rs. 100 crore is expected to be set apart for organic farming, including a scheme to motivate farmers to adopt organic farming techniques.
Bangalore: The government is planning to constitute a task force, which will be entrusted with the protection and conservation of around 150 lakes in the limits of BBMP, Bangalore Urban and Rural districts, Excise Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu said on Wednesday. Presently these lakes come under the jurisdiction of Lake Development Authority, Bangalore Development Authority, Minor Irrigation Department and Zilla Panchayat limits.

Inaugurating a workshop for Anganwadi workers to assist elderly persons on Wednesday, he said that senior citizens welfare should not be ignored and adequate measures should be initiated to see that they are taken care of.
Bangalore, DHNS: Now, NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) beneficiaries can take up works in their private land too... Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department has taken the decision to allow works related to rain water harvesting and afforestation under the scheme in private land. Since the introduction of the scheme (Feb 2005), works were allowed only in the government land.
Bangalore: A drastic fall in the water level of Kabini reservoir has forced the government to request far-mers in achkat area to sow ragi and maize instead of water intensive crops like paddy... Speaking to reporters on Wednesday after a meeting with Cauvery Neeravari Nigam officials, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Shobha Karan-dlaje said the current water storage in the Kabini stood at 3.5 tmc ft this year as against 65.83 tmc ft last year.

The country plans to build eight 700-mw nuclear plants to boost its nuclear power generation capacity to about 10,000 mw and is stepping up exploration of new uranium mines, a top Atomic Energy Commission official has said. At present, the country has a nuclear power generation capacity of 4,000 mw but the plants are facing a uranium crunch. Existing power plants are now operating at only around 50% of their capacity due to the shortage of fuel.
