  • No water contamination: BWSSB

    The BWSSB officials on Monday said there is no case of water contamination at Shamanna Garden from where 20 suspected gastro-entritis cases were shifted to Isolation Hospital. Assistant Executive Engineer K Narasanna said the samples of water were taken from the spot and tested in the presence of BBMP health inspector. "The samples showed sufficient chlorination and so it has been clearly proved there is no problem with the water quality,' he said.

  • Cholera threat lurking in City

    The threat of a cholera outbreak loomed large over the City with 46 suspected cases of the disease being admitted at Isolation Hospital since Sunday. Seven cases which tested positive for cholera under the hanging drop method, at St Martha's Hospital (5) and St Philomena's Hospital (2), were referred to Isolation Hospital. According to BBMP, 35 cases of gastroenteritis (GE) were reported from various parts of the City over the past two days, the highest number of them from Shamanna Garden and surrounding areas in Jagajivanram Nagar.

  • Lalbagh green to get global hues

    It will be more greenery for Lalbagh Botanical Gardens as the horticulture department has embarked upon a special tree exchange programme, to add to the parks existing diversity on the lines of animal exchange plans undertaken by zoos of the country. Though the City's lung space is shrinking, the silver lining is that under this programme, the park will get over 3,000 trees from every nook and corner of the world. "We already have about 7,500 trees of 1,854 species. Now another 850 species will arrive,' Dr M Jagadish, Deputy Director, Lalbagh Botanical Gardens told Deccan Herald.

  • Byappanahalli: Metro on time

    Sources in BMRCL told Deccan Herald that the state-of-the-art Byappanahalli station would be a terminal station, located between Old Madras road and the railway station at Byappanahalli. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), keen to have the train on track by the 2010-11 deadline, has completed the design process for the Byappanahalli station, a major public transport hub in the eastern part of the City. With this, the BMRCL has completed the design process of all stations in Reach One. The construction tender for the project will be called on May 25.

  • MRPL to expand capacity

    Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) will invest Rs. 8,000 crore in the next three years to expand the capacity of its present refinery at Mangalore from 9.69 million tonnes to 15 million tonnes, R. Rajamani, Managing Director, said here on Thursday. Environment clearance Mr. Rajamani said the company had obtained environmental clearance for the expansion and the process for its expansion would begin in right earnest.

  • State gets highest allocation

    Assam and Jammu & Kashmir received the highest allocation of additional funds for police modernisation during the last fiscal. Twenty-four States had demanded a total of Rs 537.91 crore additional funds but the Centre allocated Rs 346.28 crore only based in their utilisation of funds in 2006-07 and funds available at the revised Budget estimates. Assam got the highest allocation of additional funds of Rs 30.61 crore even as it demanded Rs 37.70 crore for modernising its forces in the fight against insurgency, a senior official said.
