‘The project will affect the livelihood of farming community’ More than 200 farmers and women staged a demonstration at a village in Chennimalai block of Erode district on Tuesday protesting against the Gas Authority of India Limited's (GAIL) move to lay the gas pipeline through farm lands. Farmers and women gathered at a field in Periyakattupalayam near Chennimalai, one of the villages enroute the pipeline, and raised slogans against the GAIL authorities stating that the project would affect the livelihood of the farming community.
Make use of 150 to 200 tonnes of waste generated in Madurai There is a huge potential for converting waste into biogas, according to S.P. Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani has appealed to traders and other commercial establishments in the city to extend their full cooperation to the civic body in its efforts to improve solid waste management in the city. The Corporation has planned to evolve a system of collecting garbage from commercial establishments to a specified time-table. Traders should segregate degradable and non-degradable wastes and hand them over to the Corporation workers properly.
The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) Staff Association, affiliated to the INTUC, has urged the State government to pass a legislation to bring the conservation of water sources under the hands of the authority to address the worsening shortage of drinking water in the recent years. The demand, made in a resolution at the State council meeting held here at the 14th State convention of the association that concluded here on Sunday, said majority of water sources in the State were increasingly getting polluted and as such the KWA should be entrusted with the task of preserving the water sources to ensure that water distribution was made even more transparent.

For dumping garbage in the lake despite an interim order The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Bench, on Thursday directed the Pallavaram Municipal Commissioner to appear before it and explain why the civic body continues to dump waste in ‘Periya Eri’ (lake) in spite of an interim order against it. Following an application from S.P. Surendranath Karthik, Madipakkam, the National Green Tribunal, New Delhi, in September last, granted an interim injunction restraining the municipality from dumping waste in the lake.
Survey has identified 282 malnourished childrenin 26 slums of the district World Vision, a development and advocacy organisation, has implemented a project to tackle child malnutrition in Coimbatore since January. It has been taken up in collaboration with Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), a Central Government-sponsored social welfare scheme. The organisation, which has consultative status with UNESCO and partnerships with UN agencies such as United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO), undertook a survey in 26 urban slums in the district, which revealed a child malnutrition rate of 45 per cent, according to K. Vetriselvan John, Programme Manager (Coimbatore), World Vision.

Rajendra Prasad, Assistant Director, Panchayats, said that apprehending serious drinking water shortage during March-April, District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan had utilised various funds solely for tackling the issue. As much as Rs.37 crore had already been spent for drinking water facilities alone.
Fisheries Minister K. A. Jayapal launched the Solar Energy Peoples Movement to promote solar power-based activities in the district at a function here on Wednesday. The Minister said that the Chief Minister has a vision of developing Tamil Nadu as a world leader in solar energy and introduced Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2012 with that goal. The government intends to make solar energy a people’s movement.
Time to strengthen its prey base The recent wildlife census conducted at Kalakkad – Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) shows a significant increase in the predator population and signals the need to strengthen its prey base or herbivore population. When the survey team crossed Rettaikaradu area in Thirukkurunkudi range, the members saw a panther, a ‘shy animal’, taking rest under a shade and another team, which was trekking near Maanjolai above Manimuthar dam, saw a panther standing on a rock at a distance.
