Members of farmers’ association have written to the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, Jayanthi Natarajan, to have a relook at issues concerning human-animal conflict. In their letter, association members V. Balasubramaniam and P. Kandasamy have said that the Minister, as the chairperson of the first zonal conference on animal welfare, should hear the farmers, experts in animal welfare and others before arriving at a decision. Citing instances of wild boars venturing out of forest areas and destroying crops and cattle, he said that any attempt to chase away wild boars or action against them attracted sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. The Central Government should amend the laws in such a way that the farmers who initiated defensive action to protect their crops or cattle against wild boards or other animals were not booked under the provisions of the Act.

The Coimbatore Consumer Cause and the Tamil Nadu Pumps and Spares Manufacturers’ Association have appealed to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to ensure equal distribution of power across the State. They have written to the TNERC recently opposing just two hours of load shedding a day in Chennai as against more than 10 hours in the rest of the State. R. Kalyanasundaram, president of the Tamil Nadu Pumps and Spares Manufacturers’ Association, has said that the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) sanctioned connections based on its generation and purchase capacity and hence it should provide electricity to the consumers for the sanctioned load.
She also wants entire power from Kudankulam project to be dedicated to Tamil Nadu Foreseeing a worsening of power crisis, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday wrote to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking allocation of 2,830 MW of power from Central generating stations to the State as an interim arrangement and dedicate the entire power from the Kudankulam nuclear power project to Tamil Nadu. In her letter to Dr. Manmohan Singh, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the State was going through a severe power crisis of a magnitude unprecedented in recent memory. While the demand was about 12,000 MW, supply was only about 8,000 MW, leaving a gap of 4,000 MW.
Identification of beneficiaries done through Gram Sabhas The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RD and PR) Department would construct a total of 1,497 solar-powered green houses for below poverty line families in Coimbatore district during the current financial year. Work is on in 12 blocks of the district especially in villages such as Vellamadai, AS Kulam, Keeramathur in SS Kulam and Malumichampatti and Palathurai in Madukkarai. Under this scheme, Rs.1.80 lakh will be allotted for each beneficiary by the State Government, of which Rs.30,000 is for purchasing solar-powered home lighting system.
The Centre should extend Rs. 1,000-crore aid to farmers of Tamil Nadu who have been facing an unprecedented drought in the wake of monsoon failure, P. Shanmugam, State general secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, said. He told reporters here on Monday that nine farmers in various parts of the State had committed suicide recently, owing to crop failure. The Chief Minister did not announce relief for their families. Each family should be compensated to the tune of Rs. 10 lakh, besides being provided government jobs.
