To link Siruvani distribution network with Pilloor network To overcome any difficulty it may have on the water supply front in Summer 2013, the Coimbatore Corporation has initiated a few measures. Disclosing the details, Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy said that the civic body planned to link the Siruvani distribution network with the Pilloor distribution network at a few points in the city.
They were found to be discharging effluents into waterways The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board demolished 11 unauthorised textile processing units, here, on Monday. The units, located in Surampatti dam, Kasipalayam, Kollampalayam and Choolai areas, were found pumping huge amount of untreated, toxic effluents into the waterways, causing irreversible damage to the environment, officials from the board said.

The Minister was participating in the bhumi pooja for laying new roads and public utility facilities in several places in Aravakurichi, K.Paramathi and Pallappatti areas of the district falling under Aravakurichi Legislative Assembly constituency. The total cost of the projects that were kick started on Sunday was put at Rs.5.70 crore.

To be promoted under the public-private partnership mode A 100-megawatt (MW) solar energy park is to come up in Ramanathapuram district, one of the economically backward districts of the State, at a cost of Rs. 920 crore. To be established over 500 acres in Paramakudi taluk, the park project will be promoted under the public-private partnership mode. “This will be the country’s first solar energy park to be set up through the PPP mode,” according to an official release.
Heavy influx of elephants; more than 150 sighted in 16 places With human-animal conflict heightening in Valparai due to the influx of a number of elephants, Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) officials have stepped up conflict mitigation efforts by deploying more forest personnel to monitor herd movement and alert people. The officials embarked on a mapping exercise to bring in conflict mitigation mechanisms in Valparai town and surrounding areas, said Rajiv K. Srivastava, Field Director of Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
The State Government (Department of Forest) has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Forests on allotting 20,000 hectares of forestland to convert it into a tiger sanctuary in Kanyakumari district. However, it is objected to by farmers as well as Kani tribes as the formation of the tiger sanctuary will definitely affect their livelihood. According to a cross section of farmers who depend on agriculture, particularly cash crops, say that the conversion will disastrously affect the lives of more than 5 lakh people who are dependent on this forestland and hence, they have demanded the immediate cancellation of the proposed project.
Punjab Cabinet approved the ambitious Rs. 1,427-crore project which will link the city with its satellite town Mohali, on Wednesday. The decision to link S.A.S. Nagar Mohali with Chandigarh was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, an official spokesman said here.
