A proposal to make all higher education institutions in Tamil Nadu become solar energised by 2017 has been submitted to the Government of Tamil Nadu. P. Kandaswamy, Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, and Member, Programme Advisory Committee, Department of Science and Technology, has submitted a proposal on “Green Energy for Higher Education Institutes in Tamil Nadu”, the implementation of which suggests that from 2017 all higher education institutions will shed their dependence on conventional energy.

One of the resolutions the Coimbatore Corporation Council passed at the Monday’s meeting urged the State Government to sanction a mono rail project for the city. The Mayor proposed the resolution and the Council unanimously accepted it. The Council resolution comes after various associations urged the civic body to take up the issue as the city badly deserved one. More than a fortnight ago, the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore urged the Corporation to take up the proposal, saying that cities with far lesser population, area and financial wherewithal had made considerable progress in getting sanction for a mass transport project and a few even commencing preliminary work.
Arrangement to last for a year in 12 zones, pending privatisation of operations Temporary arrangements for transportation of debris and garbage in yet-to-be-privatised zones are likely to be in place this week. The Chennai Corporation Council is likely to permit a private player to cart garbage and debris in 12 zones using tipper lorries for a period of one year. The temporary arrangement has been proposed to cope with the challenge of inadequate garbage clearance in the newly added zones – Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur.
As the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) meeting has failed to break the stalemate over the continued release of Cauvery water for ‘samba’ cultivation, Tamil Nadu will immediately file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to Karnataka to release the water. This was decided at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who held discussion with senior Ministers and officials on Monday. Ms. Jayalalithaa directed the officials to file the petition in the court to get Tamil Nadu’s share of water.

Agitators demand withdrawal of police force from Idinthakarai Condemning the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board’s nod for fuel loading in the first reactor of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, fishermen of coastal hamlets in the district formed human chain on the beach on Saturday. In the agitation held at Uvari, Koothenkuzhi, Idinthakarai, Perumanal and Koottapuli, a few thousands of fishermen and children participated and raised slogans against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project.
With a view to bringing down the maintenance cost of the street lights of local bodies, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced a scheme to replace the existing lights with a light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs and solar energy lamps. A release said many municipalities were struggling to meet the electricity bills for the street lights. The LED bulbs will be used on experimental basis in nine corporations, 35 municipalities in Tirupur and Thanajvur region and 101 town panchayats.
Permitting ethanol production will save up huge chunk of foreign exchange spent on petroleum exports, said S. Nallasamy, pro-toddy activist and field organiser of People’s Movement of India. He was speaking to reporters here after the ethanol campaign journey led by him reached Tiruvannamalai on Saturday. “India relies on imports for 80 per cent of its petroleum needs. By extensively replacing petroleum with ethanol, that could be produced from sugarcane and corn etc., not only the foreign exchange, we can also save our farmers and the whole economy. Some may argue that by permitting ethanol production, we may end up permitting a steep hike in the price of sugar.
