Rs.1.71 crore for strengthening and laying black-topped roads The National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD)has sanctioned over Rs.4 crorefor developing rural infrastructure in the district. The WHO had said that tobacco consumption was the leading preventable cause of death. Tobacco consumption caused 5.4 million deaths per year. In India, there were nearly 275 million tobacco users and every year about one million people died.
Tension prevailed here for about five hours on Sunday as the police thwarted a bid by about 3,000 agitators to lay siege to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) site to protest fuel-loading in the reactor. Arulagam, an NGO involved in the conservation of nature and wildlife, is planning a workshop and human chain in Udhagamandalam next week in a bid to generate awareness of the need to conserve the Indian Vulture (Gyps Indicus) population, on the verge of becoming extinct. S. Bharathidasan, secretary of Arulagam told The Hindu that the event will be organised to mark the just- concluded World Vulture Day celebrations. Arulagam had already organised awareness programmes at Masinagudi in the Nilgiris, where a considerable number of vultures continue to exist in the Moyar Valley that extends to Thengumarahada in Sathyamangalam of Erode district. Subsequently, a similar programme was held to put an end to the use of Diclofenac at Vayyampalayam in Coimbatore, which has a sizeable cattle population.
After not-so-successful attempts at source segregation of waste initiatives in the city, the Coimbatore Corporation is gearing up for introducing a few measures aimed at restarting the process. And the civic body has every reason to do so because at stake is Rs. 96 crore – the money it has invested to put in place a solid waste management system. Sources in the Corporation say that under the Shunya – Zero Waste Management project, the civic body with help from ICLEI, an NGO, and others, is planning to conduct a day-long workshop on source segregation of waste for stake-holders and civil society organisations and follow it up with introducing the process in a few wards on a trial basis.
