Though drip irrigation is ideal for banana and patronised in several parts of the country, it is unfortunate that farmers of the Cauvery delta have not realised its importance, M. M. Mustaffa, Director, National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB), said on Monday. Talking to presspersons at the centre, near here, just ahead of the 19{+t}{+h}Foundation Day, he pointed out that an acre of banana normally required 900-1200 millimetre of water. “By opting for drip irrigation you can save as much as 30 per cent to 40 per cent and thus extend your area as well.”

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has laid down a condition that the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) should adopt a suitable system to reduce the temperature of the trade effluent at the final discharge point so that the resultant rise in the temperature of the sea does not exceed seven degrees Celsius above the ambient temperature. The board stipulated the condition in its fresh consent order to operate the plant, a copy of which was submitted to the Madras High Court
To increase accountability in water supply management, Chennai Metrowater will soon implement a system where the entire process, from sourcing to distribution of drinking water to residents, will be monitored through a centralised online network. The water agency floated a tender recently to implement the project using real-time data acquisition and a matrix display system. According to sources in Metrowater, the centralised city water supply network will help the agency monitor the status of supply daily.
Collector Rajendra Ratnoo has urged private hospitals and clinics to adopt appropriate medical waste management system, failing which they will face penal action. At a review meeting held here on Tuesday, he told medical officers that they should keep a tab on waste disposal from private hospitals and clinics. If there are infringements on this score, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board would initiate disciplinary action against defaulting private hospitals and clinics.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Monday demanded that the State be given full allocation of 2,000 megawatt (MW) of electricity from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP). A resolution, adopted at a meeting of the executive committee held at the party headquarters here, referred to Chief Minister and the AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s earlier appeal in this regard. The demand had been made considering the shortage of power in the State, constraints in transmission corridor and the delay in integrating the southern region with the rest of the country.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), following the recommendation from the District Collector, has issued orders to close down and disconnect power supply for six glue factories in Pernambut for causing environment pollution by discharging untreated effluents. Collector Ajay Yadav has sternly warned industries polluting the water bodies and ground water of disconnection of power supply and closure of the unit. According to a press release, the district administration has been continuously receiving complaints on pollution of water bodies and ground water due to discharge of effluents from glue manufacturing and leather industries operating at Pernambut..
TANGEDCO to implement scheme in Aranthangi, Pudukottai Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has got a sanction of Rs.26.96 crore for implementing various measures to improve transmission and distribution of power in the municipal towns of Aranthangi and Pudukottai in the district.
