Sathyamangalam forest in Erode district has been declared a Tiger Reserve. It is the fourth such reserve in Tamil Nadu. The three other tiger reserves are at Mudumalai in the Nilgiris district, Anamalai in Coimbatore district and Kalakad-Mundanthurai in Tirunelveli district. The Forest Department has received the Government Order declaring Sathyamangalam Forests as a tiger reserve, and the Union government has also notified it, Conservator of Forests, Erode circle, A. It was announced in Corporation Budget The Coimbatore Corporation Council on Monday accorded approval for the waste-to-energy project. At the urgent meeting, the Council decided to implement the project, which will use 500 metric tonnes waste a day to generate power. The Council approving of the project comes days after Finance and Taxation Committee Chairperson R. Prabhakaran made an announcement in this regard in the Corporation Budget for 2013-14.
The Tamilaga Vivsayigal and Thozhilalargal Munnetra Iyakkam has appealed to the State government to ban sand quarrying totally between June and January and during the monsoon seasons. During other periods, only dry sand should be quarried, that too only through local panchayats, it pleaded. In a statement, Marudur M. Shanmugham, founder of the farmer association, said it was because of indiscriminate sand quarrying that the Cauvery had virtually been ravaged.
