Adviser to resume meeting today on expediting food procurement

The food ministry's meeting with the representatives of the North Bengal Rice Mill Owners' Association was adjourned at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday with the millers mounting pressure on the government to continue supply of rice at Tk 28 a kilogram from its stock.
The mill owners also demanded incentives to offset the losses they were reportedly incurring from selling rice at the prices fixed by the government, said meeting sources.
Food secretary Molla Waheeduzzaman presided over the meeting held for expediting the government's food procurement drive that has slowed down owing to the millers' unwillingness to sell rice to the government for Tk 28 a kilogram when market prices are constantly going up. The mill owners also protested against the latest statutory order for rice procurement.
A four-member team led by general secretary of the North Bengal Rice Mill Owners' Association, KM Laek Ali, attended the meeting, along with others.
The meeting is expected to resume today with the food and disaster management adviser, AMM Shawkat Ali, in the chair.
The government, however, is now planning to extend the August 31 deadline for procurement of food-grains to achieve its target by
