Food aid worth several millions has been rotting in warehouses in eastern Serunuwara (Sri Lanka)for over nine years. The aid had been sent by the World Food Programme to be distributed among villagers. Rice, coconut oil, dhal and sugar are among the items rotting in cooperative stores, according to villagers, and most of the items except the coconut oil are said to be unfit for human consumption.
