Luanda — A delegation of the European Union (EU) in Angola is announcing this Wednesday in Luanda the granting this year of EUR 1.3 million to fight hunger and malnutrition of children and vulnerable people affected by drought that is hitting the southern region of the country.
This sum will be made available through the general directorate for European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO), according to a note from the EU delegation that reached Angop on Tuesday.
For the announcement of the initiative, the EU delegation is holding this Wednesday a press conference at its headquarters, an event that is counting on the presence of its ambassador, Gordon Kricke.
According to the note, the support of the EU aims to reduce infant mortality and morbidity caused by malnutrition in the communities most affected by drought.
This amount will provide nutritional assistance to children who have symptoms of acute or moderate malnutrition, estimated at 190,000, under five years of age, identified in the provinces of Cunene and Huila.
The beneficiary children, over 12 months, will be assisted by the NGO "World Vision" in partnership with the National Department of Nutrition of the Ministry of Health.
The intervention, according to the document, will also increase the resilience of rural populations, knowledge of best practices in terms of prevention and treatment of child malnutrition in the future.
For this initiative, it will be purchased and distributed therapeutic and supplementary food for nutrition centres, as well as training sessions for staff of the centres on the identification and treatment of children with malnutrition.
These actions are part of the EU's overall strategy to end chronic child malnutrition in the world.
