New Delhi/Mumbai: Autorickshaw and taxi fares went up in Delhi on Tuesday while Mumbai restricted itself to an auto fare hike, leaving taxi drivers threatening a strike if fares were not increased in a day or two.
According to new rates in effect from Wednesday, auto commuters in Delhi will now pay Rs 19 for the first 2km (up from the present Rs 10 for the first km) and Rs 6.50 for every kilometre thereafter (up by Rs 2). For taxis, meter down will be Rs 20 and Rs 11 for every kilometre therafter. The government has also mooted a new low-cost taxi at a flat rate of Rs 10 per km.
Mumbai raised minimum auto fare from Rs 9 to Rs 11, with every additional kilometre to cost Rs 6.50. Taxi unions are demanding an increase in minimum fare from Rs 14 to Rs 15, a decision on which is likely to be taken on Wednesday.
