Normal life was crippled in Assam during the 12-hour bandh called by the AGP, BJP and supported by Left parties in protest against the unprecedented price rise of essential commodities, including the soaring cost of petroleum products. No major incidents were reported during the period. The bandh that started at five in the morning resulted in near-nil attendance in important government offices, while business and educational institutions remained closed, and the major highways saw a sharp fall in vehicular traffic. In Guwahati, the main commercial hubs of Fancy Bazar, Paltan Bazar, Maligaon, Ganeshguri, etc., all had shutters down, as shops in other areas also remained closed. Afternoon showers in most parts of the city further contributed to the city wearing a deserted look. A few buses of the ASTC provided the only mode of public transport in the city as privately owned buses kept off the road. The police maintained a strong presence in parts of the city, and detachments of police personnel kept vigil in and around some areas including Dispur and Fancy Bazar area. The city regained a semblance of normal life in the evening as residents came out to public spaces and vehicles made their presence felt on the roads. At Sonapur, on the outskirts of the city, the police detained around 30 members belonging to the tea tribe community who were part of a protest march. They were released in the evening. However, it was business as usual for the Northeast Frontier Railway with train services remaining unaffected during the bandh. Senior sources in the NFR said that all the trains scheduled for today plied during the bandh period.
