The first bus accident on the BRT corridor since its trial run began has driven home a point: even the supposedly much wider bus lanes also lack enough space for buses to manoeuvre. On Tuesday morning, two passengers in a Blueline bus were injured when the driver made an attempt to save a pedestrian who suddenly came on the corridor by swerving to the left and hitting the railing. The incident took place at Pushp Vihar around 8 am. The bus on route number 544 was headed from Ambedkar Nagar to Sarjoni Nagar at the time. As the bus hit the railing near a bus stand, Rahul Kashyap, 19, and Laxman Kumar, 48, standing in the front end, suffered minor injuries and were taken to AIIMS. Ambedkar Nagar police have arrested and booked the driver, Shafi Mohammed, under IPC Section 279 for rash driving. The police say he was speeding on the corridor. But a senior traffic officer said it was a mishap waiting to happen. "There is no space for buses to manoeuvre on the corridor. It can get really dangerous.' Joint Commissioner (traffic) S N Shrivastava said, "If investigation finds that the accident happened due to the pedestrian's mistake he can be booked for abetting injury.'
