The Delhi Government on Wednesday informed the Centre that it is reviewing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in view of the public outrage. Senior Government officials, in a meeting chaired by Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran, said they are working on other modalities so that the concept works albeit in a different format. Some of the Government officials were also at the receiving end for introducing the ill-conceived project. Civic body officials, mayors and traffic department officials from different cities across the country attended the meeting convened to discuss the disbursement of funds towards the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURUM). "The BRT was also on the agenda and authorities from other cities were apprehensive as to what went wrong and what made the Delhi Government to look back after sanctioning almost Rs 2,000 crore for seven BRT corridors," said a source present in the meeting. Officials from cities like Ahemdabad, Nagpur and Indore, which are likely to introduce BRT expressed their interest but said they will go ahead with meticulous planning and safest design keeping in mind the safety of all segments using the corridor. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) also made presentations advocating the BRT in Delhi as well as other 10 cities including Ahemdabad, Pune, Nagpur, Indore and Bangalore. The officials from Pune, in an apparent bid to urge JNURUM funds from the Centre, said that BRT was good switchover in view of spiralling number of bus commuters. Notably, BRT in Pune has been a fiasco with the citizens demanding repeal of the system. Interestingly, officials from Delhi Government tried to explain the delegates that 5.8 km stretch between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand is working fine. Sources said that the DIMTS gave a presentation showing that 95 per cent road users on the 5.8 km stretch were bus and cycle commuters. When asked to comment on the review meeting, none of the Delhi Government officials involved in the BRT project were ready to talk about. "At this point of time we can only say that we are working for the success of Phase-II of BRT between Moolchand and Delhi Gate. Segregation of lanes would soon begin on the stretch," said a top Delhi Government official.
