Cash-strapped state trims funds for mid-day meal scheme

On Monday, the supreme court warned State Governments against lax implementation of its earlier order to provide cooked meals to students instead of food grains. But the legists of the scheme have left many states and schools bewildered. Under the scheme, the Central Government will provide three kg of rice per student per month while the respective state governments will bear the cost of cooking fuel, edible oil and other ingredients. This means state governments have to pitch in financially for the scheme.
