Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today stressed the need for establishment of flood forecasting stations in coordination with organisations like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Meteorology department to mitigate the losses due to flash floods. An official release said that the Chief Minister today reviewed the flood scene in the State, particularly in the districts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji in a meeting with Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Water Resources Development Minister Bharat Chandra Narah and senior officials of the concerned departments. Gogoi called upon the officials of the concerned departments to chalk out an action plan for digging up the beds of the rivers as it is reported that rise of the riverbeds is the main reason for deterioration of the flood situation in the State. Gogoi also announced in the meeting that he would hold talks with the External Affairs Ministry on the problem created by the rivers flowing down from Bhutan so that the issue can be taken up with the Government of the neighbouring country. He further stressed the need for making the district disaster management authorities more effective.
