A non-government organisation has urged the Delhi Government to continue expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit corridor in the Capital. Reacting to reports that the BRT corridor would not be implemented beyond Moolchand, Hazards Centre has written to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to review the decision to curtail the corridor. Disturbing signal In the letter to Ms. Dikshit, Hazards Centre director Dunu Roy said: "The recent announcement in newspapers that the BRT corridor would not be implemented as planned earlier beyond Moolchand comes as a very disturbing signal to many of us who have been welcoming the concept of affordable, accessible and comfortable public transport in the city.' Boon for the city Referring to the BRT corridor as a boon for the city, the organisation said: "The BRT is a tremendous boon for the city, although a few problems like coordinated functioning of traffic lights need to be optimised. For the first time, the neglected 80 per cent of the citizens are being given legal space on the roads and an opportunity to assert their contribution to the city's economy and to demand their rights.' The organisation has also offered to do a sample survey of the BRT corridor users according to the modal distribution on the road to help dispel reservations against the system.
