Payment of Rs 150 crores on the lot of 90 buses has been withheld along with Rs 4 crores out of the total bill of Rs 10 crores to be paid to the Tatas
The Delhi Assembly on Monday was rocked on the issue of six low-floor CNG buses catching fire in the recent time. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit later in the evening presided a high level meeting and told the Tatas, the supplier of the buses, that it would have to take up comprehensive check-up of 950 buses by January 2010.
The chief minister also directed the DTC that it should ensure that only those buses would be brought on the roads "which are found perfect in all respects at the time of morning inspection at various depots". "The comprehensive check-up will include each and every vital part of the CNG bus. The check-up will continue on a regular interval to satisfy all the norms of safety. The Tatas has further been told to be more cautious and revise their time schedule for general checks," the chief minister told reporters, while briefing about the outcome of the meeting.
Earlier in the day, the Opposition BJP moved a "call attention motion" on the recent incidents of lowfloor CNG buses catching fire in the capital, which was taken up with the Speaker ruling that the scheduled raising of issues by the MLAs under Rule 280 be "considered having been read".
Leader of the Opposition V.K. Malhotra charged that the government has been taking the incidents of buses catching fire "lightly", while expressing concern on the safety of the passengers. The BJP legislators, including Harsh Vardhan, Saheb Singh Chouhan and Mohan Singh Bisht, alleged scam in the procurement of the "costly" low-floor buses by stating that the norms have been flouted.
However, Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, while replying to the discussion, stated that the incidents have been due to "technical snags" and were not all the incidents of fire. On the action taken, Mr Lovely stated that the payment of Rs 150 crores on the lot of 90 buses has been withheld along with Rs 4 crores out of the total bill of Rs 10 crores to be paid to the Tatas for the annual maintenance cost.
