Diabetes affecting more people in rural areas

JAIPUR: Diabetes is affecting many people in rural areas too in increased numbers. As per Annual Health Survey (AHS) 2010-11, there were only 67 persons out of 1 lakh suffering from diabetes in rural Rajasthan but now the number has gone up to 224 people out of 1 lakh, the AHS 2012-13 shows. Diabetes, which is commonly known as a lifestyle disease, is making inroads in rural areas. According to AHS 2012-13, there are 252 men per 1 lakh who are suffering from the disease. But, the disease is victimizing women in rural areas. There are 195 per 1 lakh women who are living with diabetes, the AHS 2012-13 says. In many parts of the state the number of women suffering from diabetes is more than male counterparts. According to the recently released AHS, the prevalence of diabetes among urban women is 1,547 out of 1 lakh population, while 1,309 men out of 1 lakh are affected by diabetes in Udaipur. The situation in Ajmer is more or less the same. There are 1,904 urban women out of 1 lakh here who are suffering from diabetes while the number of males is 1,791. In Chittorgarh 1,098 urban women were found to be suffering from diabetes while diabetic males are 1,079 out of 1 lakh. In Jodhpur too, the more women are suffering from diabetes than men in urban areas. The number of urban women suffering from diabetes is also on the rise. According to AHS 2010-11, it was 318, but the number increased to 1,013 per lakh according to the recently released AHS 2012-13. In Ganganagar urban, the number of women suffering from diabetes crossed 2,000 mark. There are 12 districts in the state, which witnessed sharp increase in number of women suffering from diabetes in urban areas. In such districts, the number of women suffering from the disease is more than 1,000 per 1 lakh. The health experts claimed that the cases of diabetes are on the rise due to changes in lifestyle. More women in urban areas are leading sedentary lifestyle which is one of the factors responsible for diabetes. There is an increasing trend of people getting affected due to diabetes. As per AHS 2010-11, there were 135 people out of 1 lakh suffering from diabetes but it increased to 437 per 1 lakh, as per AHS 2012-13. The district which has the highest percentage of diabetic people in the state is Ganganagar with 2,294 persons per lakh with diabetes.
