Direct food aid once reaches a rural Bangladesh household is most likely to be taken care of by a female, whereas additional cash will be certainly managed by a male. Food aid thus has the intrinsic virtue of expanding women's power over household resources. A study by the International Food Policy Research Institute in 1993 found that food consumption increased in the households of Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) women who received wheat.
